All About VET

VET stands for Vocational Education and Training.

Hello

Opportunities to do VET include Pre-Apprenticeships, School-Based Apprenticeships and School-Based Traineeships. VET engages students in work related learning built on strategic partnerships between schools, registered training organisations (RTOs), business, industry and the wider community.

Delivery arrangements of VET to secondary students may include:

  • Auspice* – where a school purchases quality assurance aspects from an RTO and the school delivers the training to their students
  • Fee for service – where a school purchases delivery and assessment from an RTO
  • Profile – where schools access profile hours through the TAFEs
  • RTO School – where a school becomes an RTO to deliver and assess training within a defined scope of delivery

*All delivery and assessment of VET must be conducted or supervised by a qualified trainer and assessor in partnership with a registered training organisation which operates under a VET regulatory and quality framework.

VET in the WACE

Workplace Learning

Authority-developed Workplace Learning (ADWPL)

Often students combine VET with Workplace Learning. Students can use time spent in the workplace towards meeting the requirements of the Endorsed Program ADWPL. Program outline and resources can be found on the Endorsed programs page.

WACE Refreshment

To ensure senior secondary students are provided with quality vocational learning outcomes while meeting all requirements to achieve a WACE, the Board has determined that students may only use specified Certificate IV qualifications towards their WACE.

From 2027, the Authority will no longer recognise Diploma-level qualifications for WACE achievement. From 2028, the Authority will provide unit equivalents towards WACE achievement for Certificate IV qualifications, including Certificate IV accredited courses, delivered by identified registered training organisations (RTOs) which are included on the Certificate IV Specified List published by the Authority.

RTOs can make an application to the Authority for inclusion on the Certificate IV Specified List by providing evidence that the Certificate IV qualification meets the required criteria, including industry support, suitability for senior secondary students, and does not duplicate any of the WACE courses.
