Eligibility
Eligibility approval is required for enrolment in Year 12 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) courses and to receive an extra 10 minutes for the OLNA.
There are two processes for eligibility approval: one for enrolment in ATAR EAL/D, and another for enrolment in General and Foundation EAL/D and to receive extra time for the OLNA.
- EAL/D - Eligibility guide and allocation of extra time for the OLNA (for use from 2023)
- EAL/D - Eligibility guide and allocation of extra time for the OLNA (for use from 2023)
- Alignment of EAL/D Progress Map with Year 11 and 12 WACE courses
- Alignment of EAL/D Progress Map with Year 11 and 12 WACE courses
ATAR
Please note that there is a new eligibility policy for enrolment in Year 12 ATAR EAL/D from 2023.
Students who have previously been found eligible for enrolment in EAL/D ATAR Year 12 under the current policy remain eligible under the new policy.
Students who have previously been found ineligible for enrolment in EAL/D ATAR Year 12 under the current policy should email eald@scsa.wa.edu.au for information on how the policy change will impact their eligibility status.
Eligibility to enrol in the Year 12 ATAR EAL/D course from 2023
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) requires all schools to determine the eligibility of a student for enrolment in the Year 12 ATAR EAL/D course. A Year 12 student can only enrol in the ATAR EAL/D course if they have their eligibility declaration approved by their school principal. For a student to gain approval to enrol, they must complete an online eligibility declaration with supporting information and evidence by the deadline published in the Activities Schedule. Principal approval must be finalised by the Year 12 enrolment deadline. Students who do not receive principal approval may request a review by the Authority by the deadline published in the Activities Schedule.
While approval for EAL/D eligibility is only required for students enrolling in the Year 12 ATAR EAL/D course, schools are advised to collect documentation supporting EAL/D eligibility declarations at the time of initial student enrolment in the school. Students may submit their EAL/D eligibility declarations from Year 10.
Any student who has not had their EAL/D eligibility approved by the Year 12 enrolment deadline, as published in the Activities Schedule for that year, will not be able to enrol in the Year 12 ATAR EAL/D course for that year.
EAL/D eligibility process for Year 12 ATAR enrolment
The deadline for Year 12s in 2024 to submit an EAL/D declaration is listed in the table below. For further information please email eald@scsa.wa.edu.au
Key dates in the eligibility process for enrolment in Year 12 ATAR EAL/D
Date
Eligibility process step
22 March 2024 Principal approval deadline for submitted declarations from Year 12 students in 2024 25 March 2024 Year 12 student review request deadline (for students not approved by their principal) Extra time for the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) for ATAR EAL/D students
Students who are registered as eligible to be enrolled in the Year 12 ATAR EAL/D course will automatically be granted an extra 10 minutes to complete the reading, writing and numeracy components of the OLNA. Students may apply for eligibility from when they are in Year 9 in order to be granted the extra time for sitting the OLNA from the first round in Year 10. They will receive the extra time for every round of the OLNA they are required to sit until the year that their eligibility expires.
Information for students, schools and parents will be updated here.
General and Foundation
Enrolling in the Year 12 General and Foundation EAL/D courses
A Year 12 student can enrol in the General and Foundation EAL/D courses if they have eligibility approval from the teacher and school principal. For a student to be approved, the school must complete and retain the required documentation (Form for eligibility for enrolment in Year 12 General and Foundation English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) and for extra time to complete the OLNA) and supporting evidence. Schools must be prepared to submit this documentation and evidence when required by the Authority.
Extra time to complete the OLNA for General and Foundation EAL/D students
Where a General or Foundation student has EAL/D eligibility approval from the teacher and school principal, notification to the Authority for the allocation of an extra 10 minutes to complete each component of the OLNA needs to be entered by the principal (or their representative) through the OLNA dashboard. Schools must advise the Authority of any student needing the time adjustment by the deadline published in the Activities Schedule. The time adjustment will be applied to all OLNA tests completed by the student in that calendar year, therefore, this process needs to be repeated every calendar year that the student is sitting the OLNA.
Students may complete an eligibility form from when they are in Year 9 in order to be granted the extra time for sitting the first round of the OLNA.
Due date for allocation of extra time to complete the OLNA for General and Foundation EAL/D students
Please refer to the Activities Schedule for the due dates for eligibility entry in the OLNA dashboard.
OLNA and EAL/D students
The EAL/D OLNA adjustment of 10 minutes extra working time is also available to students who are not enrolled in an EAL/D course if they meet the eligibility criteria for enrolment in an EAL/D course.
For a student to be granted eligibility approval, the school must complete and retain the required documentation (Form for eligibility for enrolment in Year 12 General and Foundation English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) and for extra time to complete the OLNA) and include supporting evidence.
Once the required documentation is completed, the principal (or their representative) needs to notify the Authority, through the OLNA Dashboard, requesting an extra 10 minutes to complete each component of the OLNA.
The time adjustment will be applied to all OLNA tests completed by the student in that calendar year. Therefore, this process needs to be repeated every calendar year that the student is sitting the OLNA. Schools must advise the Authority of any student needing time adjustments by the deadline published in the Activities Schedule.
Due date for allocation of extra time to complete the OLNA for EAL/D students
Please refer to the Activities Schedule for the due dates for eligibility entry in the OLNA dashboard.
For more information about EAL/D and OLNA, please refer to the OLNA website
