Interstate Languages

Interstate Languages learning area contacts:

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) accesses a number of language courses from other states through processes established as part of the Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages (CCAFL) or through arrangements made with individual states. These courses are available to students in Year 11 and Year 12.

Delivery of an Interstate Language course

Students can study Interstate Languages courses as part of a school program.
Students can also study Interstate Languages courses via a community language school.

The Guidelines document sets out the processes for course delivery and assessment of student achievement.

The infographic below provides information on completing a WACE Language Application for community language schools.

The Authority has developed WACE versions of the syllabus for those interstate languages currently being delivered by schools or community language schools in Western Australia.

Non-school candidates for an Interstate Language

In addition, Year 12 students can register with the Authority, through their main school, to sit only the external examination in an Interstate Language as a non-school candidate. The mark of the external examination can contribute towards the calculation of the student’s ATAR used for university entrance.

The infographic below outlines the process for enrolling as a non-school candidate in a language course examination.

External examinations

The external examinations for these mostly small candidature or community languages are borrowed from the host states. External examinations are:

  • available to Year 11 and Year 12 students who are enrolled in and have completed the relevant Interstate Language course units (Units 3 and 4) at a school or community language school
  • available to Year 12 non-school candidates, who are enrolled in at least three other examinations in the same year as sitting the Interstate Language examination.

Oral examinations

The CCAFL oral examination specifications can be accessed below.

Some Interstate Language courses require students to choose a subtopic and supporting visual material for discussion in the practical (oral) examination. Students must bring a hard copy of their supporting visual image to their practical (oral) examination. Markers will refer to the supporting visual material in Section 2 of the practical (oral) examination.

The documents below will assist students to prepare for the practical (oral) examinations. The relevant ATAR Interstate Language courses are listed in the documents.
