Aboriginal histories and cultures are fundamental to the development of Australian identity and the formation of contemporary Australian society. In Year 11, students explore the distinctiveness and diversity of the histories, cultures and cultural expressions of First Nations Peoples both in Australia and globally. Students investigate the continuity and resiliency of First Nations Peoples’ cultural heritage and explore the experiences and impact of invasion and colonisation on First Nations Peoples. In Year 12, students investigate the ongoing impact of government policies on First Nations Peoples, including the Aborigines Act 1905 (WA) and access to and ownership of Country. Students analyse the differing views, perspectives, actions and challenges to the repatriation and care of the cultural heritage and the reconciliation process in Australia and other countries. In both years students critically explore a wide range of political, social, historical, legal and environmental issues from an intercultural perspective.

General
Australian First Nations Peoples’ histories and cultures are fundamental to the development of Australian identity and the formation of Australian society. The recognition of Australia’s First Nations Peoples as the oldest living continuous cultures in the world provides a logical starting point for this course. In Year 11, students explore factors that contribute to a group, or individual identity over time, and investigate the ways First Nations Peoples’ cultural identities and cultural expressions are uniquely expressed within Australia and around the world. In Year 12 students explore the importance of self-determination for First Nations Peoples and the ongoing resilience demonstrated by First Nations Peoples in the face of government policy and other cultural interactions. Students also investigate the important role Country and the environment play in the lives, cultures and identity of First Nations Peoples.
