DTWD Funded VET Skill Sets

A skill set is a single unit of competency or combination of units of competency from one or more vocational
education and training (VET) training packages that links to a licence or regulatory requirement, or defined
industry need. Industry plays a critical role in identifying relevant skills required and in responding to the need of skill sets.

The Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD) provides a fixed amount of funding for other VET delivered to secondary students that is aligned to the workforce development needs of the State.

This funding is prioritised for students in their final two years of compulsory schooling (Years 11 and 12) who undertake VET as part of the requirements for achieving the WACE. DTWD has consulted with industry to determine a list of skill sets which have been included in the funding scheme for delivery to secondary students (VETDSS). Students in Years 11 and 12 can undertake a DTWD funded VET skill set which, upon successful completion, will be listed on the WASSA.

Recording on the WASSA

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has made provision for the recording of the DTWD funded VET skill sets on the Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA).

Completion of a DTWD funded VET skill set will be recorded on the WASSA, however, no Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) unit equivalence will be allocated for their successful completion – see How VET contributes towards the WACE for more details.
